Dan began his journey in combat sports with kickboxing, and almost immediately posted a professional record of 9-1-3, becoming the KBF X-Rules Welterweight Champion and King in the Ring Middleweight Kickboxing Champion. Since then, he has become known for his speed, unpredictability and charisma. Hooker began his MMA career in 2009 at ICNZ 5 against Tristan Watson. He won the fight via unanimous decision and turned pro later that year. Hooker fought and defeated Mike Taylor at SCF 2 in his pro debut. He then went 2-2 in his next 4 fights before getting a title shot at the South Pacific Lightweight Championship against Rob Lisita at SCF 6. Dan lost the fight via close decision and took a year off. He returned at SFC 8 and fought again for the South Pacific Lightweight Championship, but this time against Scott McGregor. Hooker defeated McGregor via guillotine choke in the first round. He then defeated Yuma Ishizuka at AFC 2 and lost to Haotian Wu at Legend FC 8 before getting his AFC Lightweight Championship shot against Rusty McBride at AFC 3. Hooker won the fight via second-round TKO and went on to win his next four fights, including two title defenses, to join the UFC in 2014 with a professional record of 10-4.
